A Local Guide to Brisbane with Range Brewing

Beer lovers won’t be going thirsty on their visit to Newstead, an inner-city Brisbane suburb, formerly an industrial area, now known for its ever-growing restaurant and brewery culture. At the forefront is Range Brewing.

Just like the suburb they call home, Range Brewing is always evolving. With plenty of trendy dining options and shops to explore, starting or ending the night with a local beer just makes sense. Be prepared to sip on an Oreo or a jam-doughnut-flavoured brew; their specials vary weekly and are always outside the box.

You can’t go wrong with the full brewery experience of live music, killer pub-style eats and an ice-cold brew of your choice. But what else should you get up to in the area?

We asked the team at Range Brewing to share the spots in and around Newstead that they can’t get enough of.

What's your go-to when you knock off?

Jen: Zero Fox for a vino - great list!
Matt: If not in our taproom for a pint, then I'm a sucker for the front bar at the Breaky Creek for a beer. You've gotta get a XXXX off the wood for the culture. But keep an eye out for a new neighbourhood spot coming soon at Gasworks though - it will be the ultimate knock-off meeting spot.
Isla: Zero Fox! A place we consider quintessentially Newstead. It's the best afternoon spot to enjoy a drink and then rip into a Katsu Curry and some lotus root chips (it's illegal not to dip into that curry sauce).

Where are you eating on a day/night off?

Jen: Bar Monte for sure.
Matt: Honestly, you can't go past Happy Boy just up the road in The Valley. It's an institution. The food, the wine and the vibes are immaculate. My go-to is pork belly and the green beans. Cam and Fraser have also been pouring our beers there for a long time, so that's a strong bonus!
Isla: I'm walking along the river from New Farm to Newstead, stopping at Yolk to get the holy trinity- a fresh OJ, Flat White and a Truffle Hash brown (or 5), then heading to Breaky Creek Hotel for a JOOSEY steak with an ice-cold beer off the wood. It's a Brisbane institution and for good reason. Then I'm finishing the day off at the Range taproom. Going into work on your day off is crazy, but our pepperoni and hot honey pizza makes it worth it.

It's staff party time... where would you take the whole team?

Jen: Happy Boy - great vibes and share food.
Matt: A new favourite in the neighbourhood is La Bodega. Perfect for margs, Modelos and birria tacos. It's a short walk from Range too, so you could have a beer first and then mosey on up for some tacos.
Isla: Stans Lounge. Vinyl DJ, intimate seating, dark, moody lighting and a nice drinks list. It's the kind of place you could be swallowed up by and happily stay there forever. I'd also go to the Nixon Room- it's a _tiny_ hole-in-the-wall style bar with an amazing snack and cocktail menu- the ultimate girl dinner spot imo. I think about their popcorn all.the.time.

You have a 15 minute lunch break... where are you grabbing a quick bite?

Jen: Sprout Newstead for a mouth-watering sanga.
Matt: Absolutely can't go past the pork banh mi at Banh Mi Factory on Austin St in Newstead. Grab a cheeky satay skewer too if you're feeling zesty.
Isla: A jam-packed salad from Standard Market. A sando from Supernice. A burger from Yolk. Anything from Sprout Bakery.

Gotta kill time... where are you going window shopping?

Jen: James St Precinct.
Matt: The local shopping spot is definitely James St in the valley - but to be honest my favourite shop in the area is The Running Company - more into buying running shoes than fashion 🙊 Sam and Ethan always have what I need.
Isla: H aus Market in Newstead. If you're missing that perfect mix of homewares/stationery/practical storage stores found in Japan, this is the place to go. Everything is incredibly curated and well designed.
